Volunteer Gardeners at Thornton Manor
Help care for one of the Wirral's most loved historic gardens — and spend your days outdoors with a friendly team who love what they do.
We Are Looking For Volunteers To Join Our Friendly Gardens & Grounds Team
We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our gardening team on Mondays and/or Wednesdays. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or simply someone who enjoys being outside and getting hands dirty, you’ll play a real part in keeping Thornton Manor’s gardens looking their best for the thousands of visitors, brides, and guests who enjoy them every year.
No previous gardening experience is needed. Our team will show you the ropes, and you’ll pick up new skills as you go.
What's involved
- Helping with everyday upkeep — weeding, dead-heading, mulching and caring for the borders
- Lawns, hedges and pathways — keeping the wider grounds neat, accessible and looking beautiful
- Planting and development projects — from seasonal bedding and bulb planting to new trees, shrubs and longer-term schemes
- Working alongside our gardener and team to keep the gardens to a high standard of presentation and plant health
- Being a friendly face for visitors and answering the occasional question about what you're doing
- Helping us look after the gardens sustainably, so they continue to thrive for future generations
This role might suit you…
…if you love being outdoors and don’t mind a bit of physical activity. You might be someone who already enjoys gardening at home and would like to develop your skills further, or you might be completely new to it and simply drawn to the idea of learning something hands-on in a beautiful setting. Either way, you’ll need to be happy working outside in most weathers — though we’ll always make sensible calls when the weather turns genuinely unkind.
Just as importantly, you’ll be the sort of person who enjoys being part of a small, friendly team – our volunteers are a sociable bunch!
What you'll get out of it
- Time outdoors in one of the most beautiful private gardens in the North West
- The chance to develop your gardening knowledge alongside experienced staff
- The satisfaction of helping preserve and shape a much-loved historic landscape
- A warm welcome into a small, friendly team — and the gentle social side that comes with it
How to get involved
If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, we'd love to hear from you. Please complete our enquiry form below and a member of the team will be in touch to chat through the details and arrange a time for you to come and meet us.
